HOSTAGE RESCUE TEAM (HRT) TRAINING DEATHS

The members of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of Special Agents Christopher Lorek and Stephen Shaw, as well as to their active duty FBI colleagues. While the high risk of serving on the elite HRT is well recognized, all of us in the FBI Family mourn the tragic loss of these Agents in a training exercise off the coast of Virginia Beach on Friday, May 17.

The HRT is part of the Critical Incident Response Group based at Quantico in Northern Virginia. The group is composed of full-time FBI Special Agents, who constantly prepare for rapid deployment to tactically respond to terrorist, hostage, and major criminal threats. The HRT motto, Servare Vitas (To Save Lives), was exemplified in their recent rescue of a 5-year-old boy held hostage for a week in a bunker in Alabama.

We recently marked the sixth anniversary of the disappearance from Iran of retired Special Agent Bob Levinson. He was on assignment as a private contractor. The FBI and the U.S. government are actively engaged in an ongoing effort to bring Bob Levinson home to his family. The Society and the FBIAA, together representing 20,000 former and current FBI Agents, continue to support efforts to bring him home and to support his family through this extremely difficult time.
