Generous contributions to the Foundation help alleviate some of the suffering of those who have requested assistance grants. The Foundation’s financial assistance takes many forms, including helping to pay medical bills or helping a member or widow meet the immediate financial challenges after the loss of a spouse.
Following are a few examples of the cases the Trustees approved in 2015. Member Ron Kosednar’s grandson, Elias Kosednar, was born on January 23, 2014 and was diagnosed with Interstitial Lung Disease. The doctors recommended a double-lung transplant. The Foundation provided a grant in support of post-transplant costs. The photos you see are of Elias and his family prior to his transplant, which took place on July 31, 2015 and 48 days post-transplant. Elias’ parents, Paul and Kim, along with his sisters, Hannah and Evie, have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support for them and Elias. They have witnessed the miracle that becoming an Organ Donor can provide to those in need. In an effort to pay it forward, Elias’ parents are on a mission to promote the importance of organ donation. For more information about how to get involved or to follow Elias’ progress, please visit their website at http://www.cotaforeliask.com.
In another similar case, the Foundation provided assistance grants to two FBI SWAT Team Agents from the St. Louis FBI Office who were shot during a local standoff. The grants would assist both Agents, during their recovery.
Other cases involved two members’ children who had suffered catastrophic injuries that would require special equipment and/or long-term therapy, while two others involved the children of Agents who had children dealing with life-threatening cancer diagnoses. These are just a few examples of the many assistance cases for which the Foundation provided grants.
Because many of our cases are confidential, we do not normally release the names of the recipients, but we have permission from the families of the cases mentioned here.
