Special Agent Charles Bolz served in the FBI from 1948 to 1972. This interview took place on September 25, 2009. Interviewed by John J. “Jack” O'Flaherty. SA Bolz grew up in an orphanage until the attack on Pearl Harbor, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force at just eighteen-years-old. He was very successful as a navigator and was assigned to a bomber wing to drop paratroopers behind enemy lines during the D-Day invasion and thereafter. His medals are briefly discussed. SA Bolz left the military at the end of the war, married, and finished college. He saw an ad for the FBI and applied. His appointment letter is in the Addendum to the transcript. His training passed without incident except for his test to get a driver’s license. SA Bolz was assigned to the FBI’s Chicago Field Office after a brief period chasing military deserters in Kentucky. He was then transferred to WFO, using his Accounting education, on special loan from the Bureau to the House Appropriations Committee. He came back to FBIHQ and was assigned to the Accounting and Fraud Section. When the civil rights cases were increasing, he offered to take on the “interruption of communications” cases. This was shortly before Watergate, which was originally opened as a case in this category. He talks about the Watergate case, and the people involved, including Acting Director L. Patrick Gray, Associate Director Mark Felt, and others. SA Bolz also relates his involvement in a case proceeding against James “Jimmy” Hoffa. A subpoena was served on FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, but SA Bolz testified at the trial about wiretaps. He tells of being complimented on one hand and threatened on the other. He mentions the Yablonski murder case as well. SA Bolz resigned during AD Gray’s tenure and went to a high position at U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Some newspaper clippings and a press release about these highlights are included in the Addendum.Download PDF 1
