Charles B. Smith

Date of Death: July 6, 1963 in the performance of law enforcement duty.

Cause of Death: SA Smith was serving as the SRA of the Rome Resident Agency in the Atlanta Division in 1963. On June 28, 1963, SA Smith had been working in the Atlanta office participating in a file review and performing dictation. He left the Atlanta office heading back to Rome in the afternoon in his Bureau vehicle. On his way back to Rome, he stopped to help the Georgia Bureau of Investigation on a manhunt and was at the Barrow County courthouse until 10 p.m. He called the Atlanta office and spoke to the night clerk for messages around that same time. He was found on the highway between the Barrow County Courthouse and Rome between 1 a.m. and 1:23 a.m. having been in a single-vehicle accident. SA Smith underwent three different surgeries from June 29 - July 6, 1963. The medical reports indicate that alcohol was not involved in the accident. SA Smith died on July 6, 1963, succumbing to the injuries from the vehicle accident.
