Special Agent Ashenfelter served in the FBI from 1950 to 1959. This interview took place on September 1, 2008. Interviewer Brian R. Hollstein.
SA Horace Ashenfelter, III was born in Phoenixville, PA, on January 23, 1923. After attending Pennyslyvania State University and then serving in the Air Corps for three years, he joined the FBI in 1950. In the interview Ashenfelter recounts his career in the FBI in the Boston Field Office, and the Newark Field Office. He recalls some of his experiences on the Applicant Squad. He touches on his involvement with Joseph McCarthy in the 1960s.
Ashenfelter also recalls his experience as an Olympic athlete (track and field). He touches on his interactions with J.Edgar Hoover after the Olympics.
In the final part of the interview, Ashenfelter describes how he transitioned out of the FBI into the private sector, working for DeBeers company.
